The Meaning Behind ENSŌ: Why We Chose This Symbol for Our Practice
At ENSO Psychiatric Services, the name and symbol we chose are deeply intentional and reflective of our core philosophy of healing, growth, and wholeness.
What Is an Ensō?
The word Ensō (円相) is a Japanese term meaning “circle.” In Zen Buddhism, the Ensō is a hand-drawn circle made in one fluid, expressive brushstroke—often created as part of a meditative practice. Though it may appear simple at first glance, the Ensō holds powerful and layered meaning. It symbolizes many things:
Wholeness and unity
The cyclical nature of life
The beauty of imperfection (wabi-sabi)
A moment when the mind is free to let the body create
Enlightenment and inner peace
Importantly, the Ensō is often left open—intentionally incomplete. This opening can represent imperfection, openness to change, or the idea that we are all works in progress.
